Quem User Guide

How to use each feature of the app, organized by who uses it: the family who sets it up, the person with Alzheimer's, health professionals and caregivers.

Profile 1

Family: whoever sets up the app

Set it up once, ideally together with the person. Follow the tasks in order: each one depends on the previous one.

1. Install and grant permissions

  1. Install Quem from Google Play, or copy the app file (APK) to the person's phone and tap it. If Android asks, allow installing apps from this source.
  2. Close the official HeyCyan app if it is installed: both compete for the connection to the glasses.
  3. Open Quem and allow Bluetooth and Notifications. The other permissions (camera, microphone, calls, SMS, location) are requested when you turn on each feature.

2. Connect the glasses

  1. Turn on the glasses. On the home screen, tap Find glasses and pick the W630 in the list (likely matches come first).
  2. Wait for the Ready status and the battery level to appear.
  3. In Android's Bluetooth settings, also pair the glasses as a headset. That is how the app's voice plays in the glasses.
  4. In Settings → Voice, tap Test voice and check that the sound comes out of the glasses.

Without glasses, the app uses the phone camera and speaker. See Using it without glasses.

3. Enter the person's name, nickname and language

  1. Open Settings → You.
  2. Fill in Your name (for example, Mary Smith) and Your nickname (for example, Grandma).
  3. In Settings → Language (Android 13 or later), choose the language of the texts and the voice: Phone language, Português (Brasil), English or Español. On older Android versions, the app follows the phone's language.

The name goes into emergency messages. Name and nickname also address the app: “Hi Mary, this is your brother Robinho.”

4. Register the people around them

  1. Tap the Friends icon at the top of the home screen, then +. Type the name.
  2. On the person's screen, add 3 to 5 sharp photos of the face, from the front and slightly from the side: Gallery, Camera (the phone's) or Glasses. Wait until it says “Trained with N photos”.
  3. Fill in the Nickname, which is spoken instead of the name, and the Relationship to you, such as “your brother” or “your doctor”. The app will say: “Robinho, your brother”.
  4. Fill in the Phone (with area code). It is needed to call by voice and for this person to get through the call filter.
  5. If this person should be alerted in emergencies, turn on Emergency contact.
  6. Tap Save.
  • Also register doctors, caregivers, pharmacy and bank if they need to call: anyone not registered is blocked when the call filter is on.
  • Have a FriendFinder package? Go to Friends → ⋮ → Import package or JSON. Export ZIP makes a backup.

5. Create reminders for medicines, appointments and visits

  1. Tap the alarm clock icon at the top of the home screen, then +.
  2. Choose the type: Medicine, Appointment, Visit or Other. Fill in the name (of the medicine, the doctor, the visitor) and notes such as the dose.
  3. Under When, choose Repeat (pick the days and times; use + Time for more than one a day) or Once (pick the date and time).
  4. Under Warn before, choose an early warning if you want one (from 15 minutes to 1 day). Appointments start with 1 hour.
  5. Tap Listen to hear how the reminder will sound, then Save. On the first reminder, Android may open the Alarms & reminders screen: turn Quem on so alerts arrive at the exact time.
  • To pause a reminder, use its switch in the list. To edit it, tap it. To delete it, use the trash icon inside it.
  • Medicines ask “Did you take your medicine?”. Without an answer, the app asks again up to 3 times. The interval is in Settings → Voice → Repeat medicine reminder after (10 minutes by default).
  • The next three reminders appear at the top of the home screen.

Reminders arriving late? In Android Settings → Apps → Quem → Battery, choose Unrestricted. If the reminders list shows “Alarms may be late”, tap Allow exact alarms.

6. Calls: block strangers and call by voice

  1. Open Settings → Calls.
  2. Turn on Only accept calls from registered people. Android asks whether Quem can be the caller ID app: accept.
  3. Tap Allow calling by voice and accept the call and phone state permissions.
  4. Leave Calls on speakerphone on (the default), so the person can hear and speak without holding the phone.
  • Calls made by the app start on the speaker. For incoming calls, the app turns on the speaker when answered; this works on most phones, but some models switch the sound back to the earpiece.
  • During a call, the voice command is paused so it does not react to what the other person says.
  • Rejected calls appear as a “Call blocked” notification with the number and time. Check now and then whether someone important was left out.
  • The filter requires Android 10 or later. Numbers are compared by their last 8 digits, so country code, area code and formatting do not get in the way.

7. Emergency: falls and requests for help

  1. Make sure at least one registered person has a phone number and Emergency contact turned on.
  2. Open Settings → Emergency and turn on Detect falls. Accept the SMS, call and location permissions.
  3. Adjust the Time to cancel after a fall (10 to 60 seconds; 30 by default) and decide whether the app should Call the first contact after the SMS.
  4. Test with Simulate a fall and say “I'm fine” or tap I'm fine, cancel.

Careful: if the test is not cancelled, the SMS is really sent. Tell your contacts before testing.

When an alert goes out, each contact gets an SMS like: “ALERT: Mary Smith may have fallen and did not respond. Time: 2:32 PM. Location: (map link).”

8. Turn on the voice command

  1. On the home screen, turn on Voice command “Who” and allow the microphone.
  2. Check that it shows Listening… and say “Who is it?”. The Last heard line shows what the app understood.
  3. In Settings → Button and voice command, leave Run in the background on, so everything works with the screen off.

Listen through the glasses microphone is experimental: it uses the Bluetooth call channel, the app's voice goes through it and the glasses battery lasts less. When it is off, the app uses the phone microphone.

9. Prepare the medical record

  1. Tap the medical record icon at the top of the home screen and open the Health sheet tab.
  2. Fill in allergies, conditions, current medications, blood type, health insurance, public health card and primary doctor. Write your name in Who is updating and tap Save sheet.
  3. Tap the lock and create a PIN of 4 to 8 digits. Give the PIN only to people who will write in the record.

10. Using it without glasses

  • In Settings → Photo source: Automatic (default) uses the glasses when connected and the phone otherwise; Glasses and Phone fix one of the sources.
  • With the phone camera, the home screen shows a viewfinder for aiming. Tap Allow camera the first time.
  • Use the phone's front camera switches to the selfie camera.

11. Ongoing routine

  • Unknown faces: under Last capture, tap Add to create the person or add the photo to someone already registered. Train reinforces someone who was recognized.
  • Recognition mistakes: add photos in different light. If it mixes up people who look alike, raise the Similarity threshold in Settings → Recognition; the home screen Log shows the score of each face.
  • Testing without glasses: the gallery icon next to Who is it? recognizes a photo from the phone.
  • Continuous mode: takes a photo every N seconds and only says new names. It uses battery; the interval is in Settings → Continuous mode.
  • Battery: charge the glasses and phone every night.

Profile 3

Doctors and nurses

The medical record lives on the person's phone. Ask the family for the PIN. It complements, and does not replace, your institution's official record.

Open the medical record

  1. On the home screen, tap the medical record icon (at the top).
  2. Type the PIN and tap Open. The record stays unlocked for 5 minutes.
  3. On the Health sheet tab, check allergies, conditions and current medications before any intervention.

Write an entry

  1. On the Entries tab, tap +.
  2. Fill in your name, choose your role (Doctor, Nurse or Other professional) and your license number. The app remembers these for the next entry.
  3. Choose the type: Consultation, Progress note, Vital signs, Medication, Test, Incident or Note.
  4. If there are measurements, tap + Vital signs: systolic and diastolic BP, HR, temperature, glucose, SpO₂ and weight.
  5. Write the text and tap Save entry.

Entries cannot be edited or deleted. Review before saving.

Correct a wrong entry

  1. On the entry, tap Void.
  2. Enter your name and the reason, and confirm. The entry stays visible, struck through, with who voided it and why.
  3. Write a new entry with the correct information.

Take the history to an appointment

In the medical record, tap Share (at the top). The app creates a text with the health sheet and every entry, newest first, to send by message or e-mail.

Introduce yourself to the person

On the first visit, with the person looking at you, say: “Hi Mary, this is your doctor Paul.” The app takes a photo and from then on says “Paul, your doctor” when it recognizes you.

Profile 4

Caregivers and companions

The app helps during the shift: it keeps track of times, alerts about falls and records what happened for the family and the team.

At the start of the shift

  1. Check that the glasses show Ready with battery, and that the voice command shows Listening….
  2. Look at the Upcoming reminders on the home screen.
  3. If it is your first day, introduce yourself: “Hi Mary, I'm your caregiver Ann.”

At medicine time

  • The app names the medicine and asks whether it was taken. Help the person answer “yes” after taking it, or tap I took it.
  • If it could not be taken yet, “no” or Snooze make the app remind again after the interval.
  • Record unusual doses in the medical record as Medication.

Record the shift

  1. Open the medical record (the family gives you the PIN) and tap +.
  2. Choose the role Caregiver and the type: Incident (fall, agitation, refusing food), Vital signs or Note.
  3. Write what happened and what was done, and tap Save entry.

If the app detects a fall

  1. The app says “I detected a possible fall. Are you okay?” and starts counting down.
  2. If everything is fine (for example, the phone fell), say “I'm fine” or tap I'm fine, cancel.
  3. If there really was a fall, let the alert go out or call for help directly. Afterwards, record an Incident in the medical record.

Blocked calls

If “Call blocked” appears for a number that should get through (doctor, pharmacy), ask the family to register that number.

Help

Common problems

The voice command does not understand

Check what appears under Last heard. Speak close to the phone, away from TV and noise, and wait a second in silence. If the app shows “Paused”, it is taking a photo or speaking: wait for it to finish. Make sure the app's language matches the language you speak.

The glasses button does nothing

Close the official HeyCyan app. On many models, a short press takes a normal photo and a long press takes the AI photo. The home screen Log shows the events the glasses send (“Glasses: event 0x…”); if nothing appears, the glasses are not notifying the app.

No voice in the glasses

Also pair the glasses as a headset in Android's Bluetooth settings and use Test voice. If the voice sounds wrong in English or Spanish, install that language's text-to-speech voice on the phone.

It does not recognize or mixes up people

Add more sharp photos in different light. To mix people up less, raise the Similarity threshold; to recognize more, lower it.

A reminder arrived late

Set Quem's battery usage to Unrestricted in Android settings and allow exact alarms.

The call was not on speakerphone

Check Settings → Calls → Calls on speakerphone and the phone state permission (Allow calling by voice). On some phones, the dialer does not accept the switch for incoming calls: tap the speaker button of the call itself.

Someone important cannot call

Register the person with their phone number. Check the “Call blocked” notifications to find the number.

The emergency alert was not sent

The home screen shows the reason. Usually an emergency contact with a phone number is missing, or the SMS and call permissions: use Allow SMS, calls and location in Settings → Emergency.
